Understanding costs and financial aid
We encourage every student interested in the college to familiarize themselves with the costs of attendance and the full breadth of financial aid opportunities available. We recommend you begin with the following central resources:
- Penn State Office of Student Aid
- Penn State Undergraduate Admissions Costs & Aid
- Penn State Sokolov-Miller Family Financial and Life Skills Center
If you are eligible, we encourage every student to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, as many scholarships require us to restrict the eligible pool of students to those who have a FAFSA on file.
How to apply
To be considered for scholarships awarded by the Eberly College of Science, including the Bunton-Waller, Braddock, and McKinstry, high school seniors should complete the Science Scholarship application. You must submit your application to Penn State before you are eligible to apply for scholarships within Eberly. Science scholarship applications are open and will close on January 29, 2024 at 11:00 pm EST. Letters of recommendation will be accepted until Monday, February 5, 2024. Science scholarship awardees will be notified via email and letter from the Eberly College of Science by late March 2024.
Bunton-Waller Undergraduate Scholarship Program
Named in honor of Mildred S. Bunton and Calvin H. Waller, the first-recorded African American alumna and alumnus of Penn State, the Bunton-Waller Undergraduate Scholarship Program is a merit-based award given to students who bring diverse perspectives, identities, and interests to Penn State. The Bunton-Waller program attracts students who contribute to the diversity of the student body and demonstrate strong academic and professional potential. In addition to the merit-based awards, Bunton-Waller recipients are part of the Penn State Educational Equity Scholars Program community, and participate in a living and learning community in their first year.
For additional information about the Bunton-Waller scholarships please contact Samia Cooperider by email or by phone at 814/863-0285.
The Braddock Scholarship
Awards of up to $10,000 annually are available to high school seniors who are interested in the study of astronomy and astrophysics, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, forensic science, microbiology, molecular biology, physics, or premedicine at Penn State’s University Park campus. Several Braddock Scholarships are offered each year to incoming students with an overall outstanding application consisting of strong essay responses, high school performance, extra-curricular achievements, and letters of recommendation. Your high school transcript information in your Penn State application should either indicate an emphasis on science course work or be consistent with the intent to major in one of the indicated disciplines.
The McKinstry Scholarship
Awards up to the full cost of PA tuition and half of room and board costs for on-campus housing are available to high school seniors who are interested in the study of biology or premedicine at Penn State’s University Park campus, who are Pennsylvania residents and who have identified financial need determined by their FAFSA. Typically, several McKinstry Scholarships are offered each year to incoming students with an overall outstanding application consisting of strong essay responses, high school performance, extra-curricular achievements, and letters of recommendation. Your high school transcript information in your Penn State application should either indicate an emphasis on life sciences course work or be consistent with the intent to major in one of the indicated disciplines.
For additional information about the Braddock or McKinstry scholarships please contact Megan Holmes by email or by phone at 814/865-2609.
The Millennium Scholars Program
The program is open to all high-achieving high school seniors who are interested in becoming leaders in STEM-related fields. You must apply to one of the five participating academic colleges at Penn State, which includes the Eberly College of Science, and you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. There is no additional fee to apply for the Millennium Scholars Program. Because this is a larger program that includes multiple colleges, the Millennium Scholars application is a separate application that must be completed for consideration for that program. Students offered a place in the Millennium Scholars program are not eligible to also receive a Braddock or McKinstry scholarship.
Scholarships available to continuing students
We have additional scholarship programs open to continuing students in the College of Science.
